Real human hair reacts to its environment. Sun, water, shampoo, heat, chlorine, and product all leave their mark, and a system doesn't get the natural scalp oils that keep hair on your head looking fresh.
Most of the change is preventable or reversible. A few small shifts in how you wash, dry, and store the system will buy you a lot of color.
Why a hair system changes color in the first place
A hair system is made from human hair, but it's no longer attached to a scalp. No sebum moving down the shaft, no fresh follicle replacing what gets stripped away. So whatever the hair is exposed to, it takes directly.

Other things that pull color out
Frequent washing
Every wash is water, shampoo, friction, and drying. Do it too often, or use a shampoo that's too aggressive, and the hair gets drier and duller faster.
You don't have to stop washing. Switch to a sulfate-free or color-safe shampoo, drop the water temperature to lukewarm, and stop scrubbing the hair like you're trying to remove paint from a brush.
Heat styling
A flat iron set to 200°C will strip color out of real hair faster than the sun will. Most wearers don't need that much heat. A medium setting, kept moving, with a heat protectant, gets you the same look with much less damage.
The hair on a hair system has no living follicle backing it up, so anything you do to it is permanent. That changes the math on how often you reach for the iron.
Chlorine and salt water

How to keep the color longer
You can't stop environmental wear. You can slow it down a lot.
Cover up outside. A hat is the cheapest UV filter you'll find. For longer days outdoors, a UV spray made for human hair works on top of that.
Use a color-safe shampoo. Sulfate-free is the keyword. Wash less often than you think you need to, and let the hair air-dry when you can.
Heat protectant every time. If you use any hot tool, even a blow dryer on warm, put a protectant on first. The stuff costs pennies and saves months of color.
Rinse after swimming. Don't let chlorine or salt sit in the hair. Fresh water, then a light conditioner, gets most of it out.
Store it out of the sun. When the system isn't on your head, keep it in a cool, dry place away from a window. UV hits a system sitting on a stand just as hard as one you're wearing.

Fixing color that's already shifted
What you do depends on what's actually wrong.

Coated or gunky: probably buildup. Clarify once, then go back to your normal shampoo. If the buildup is mineral-based, a chelating shampoo will do the job.

A routine that actually works
You don't need ten products. You need five habits.
- Sun protection when you're out for more than an hour or two. Hat, spray, or shade.
- Wash with sulfate-free shampoo, lukewarm water, and as few washings per week as your lifestyle allows.
- Heat protectant on any hot tool, and keep the temperature lower than you think you need.
- Rinse with clean water after any pool, ocean, or hard-water exposure.
- Store the system away from direct sun and heat when it's not on your head.
Stick to those and most systems hold their color through a full normal wearing cycle.
